Modern Iranian Cinema begins with Dariush Mehrjui. Since his film “The Cow”, a 1971 Venice Film Festival and Chicago International Film Festival prizewinner, he has introduced realism, symbolism and the sensibilities of art cinema, paving the way for the Iranian Cinematic Renaissance, also known as “The New Wave”.
